In 1923 he sold all of his possessions to finance the publication of his first book, Crepusculario (Twilight), which he published under the pseudonym Pablo Neruda. Veinte Poemas de Amor y una Cancion Desesperada (Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair), which was published the following year, made him a celebrity and allowed him to stop his studies to devote himself to poetry. His other works include España en el Corazón, Canto General, Las Uvas y el Viento, and Para Nacer He Nacido. He received numerous awards including the World Peace Prize with Paul Robeson and Pablo Picasso in 1950, the Lenin Peace Prize and the Stalin Peace Prize in 1953, and the Nobel Prize for Literature for his poetry in 1971. He died of leukemia on September 23, 1973. (Bowker Author Biography) — biography from Liebesgedichte: 20 Liebesgedichte und ein Lied der Verzweiflung (Das Besondere Taschenbuch) … (mehr) |

PAUL OTREMBA WITH TOMAS Q. MORIN - Pax Americana & Heights of Maccu Piccu (Translated) Friday, April 24 at 7PM BookPeople Presents PAUL OTREMBA with Pax Americana TOMAS Q. MORIN with The Heights of Maccu Piccu by Pablo Neruda All about Pax Americana The poems in Pax Americana are born out of the violent, fractious, and disillusioning opening to the 21st century. The decade of protracted wars and economic collapse--coupled with the polarizing of wealth and ideologies in this country--create the catalysts for this book. These are social poems that want to talk, and through talking hopefully make a space where people can meet and find meaning in each other. PAUL OTREMBA is the author of two poetry collections, The Currency (Four Way Books 2009) and Pax Americana (Four Way Books 2015). Born and raised in Minnesota, Paul studied English and Philosophy at the University of Minnesota before receiving his MFA from the University of Maryland and a PhD in creative writing and literature from the University of Houston. His essays, poetry reviews, and food writing have appeared in Tikkun, The Houston Chronicle, Spoon Magazine, and in the anthology American Poets in the 21st Century: The New Poetics. Paul is an Assistant Professor of English at Rice University. All about The Heights of Maccu Piccu "The Heights of Machu Picchu" has been called Pablo Neruda's greatest contribution to poetry—a search for the "indestructible, imperishable life" in all things. Inspired by his journey to the ancient ruins, Neruda calls the lost Incan civilization to "rise up and be born," and also empowers the people of his time. This new translation by poet Tomás Q. Morín includes an introduction by Morín and Neruda's Spanish original. TOMAS Q. MORIN Tomás Q. Morín’s poetry collection A Larger Country was the winner of the APR/Honickman Prize and runner-up for the PEN/Joyce Osterweil Award. He is co-editor with Mari L’Esperance of the anthology, Coming Close: 40 Essays on Philip Levine, and translator of The Heights of Macchu Picchu by Pablo Neruda. His poems have appeared in Slate, Threepenny Review, Boulevard, Poetry, New England Review, and Narrative.
