Paul A. Offit, MD, is the director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, as well as the Maurice R. Hilleman Professor of Vaccinology and Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Really enjoyed it. More of a carreer overview than a biography, but it gives a real sense of the man behund the scientist.

I try not to read books when I find their central thesis a foregone conclusion, but this was good, even if it felt very self-indulgent. It is hard to love vaccines more than I already did, but Dr. Offit also reviews the history of the anti-vaccine movement, which is fascinating. He also gave answers to my husband's perpetual question of: "how do I enlighten parents who want to use the Dr. Sears' schedule?"

This book is well worth a read. The author takes you on a journey with seven tales of science gone wrong. The book is thought-provoking and quite disturbing. After reading the first chapter I realized I missed an awful lot in history class or simply was never taught the material such as why did Britain have control of Hong Kong. I found all the tales had a lot of good in them and then you saw how that got twisted, generally with the best of intentions, for the worse. The chapter on opium was the most interesting for me and the chapter on Rachel Carson was the most surprising.… (mehr)
