Now out of print and out of most folks price range, this slim volume traces the steps in which power falls from the hands of the imperial families of the Western Roman Empire into the hands of the Patricians - the powerful military leaders of the region; an Occidental Shogunate. Three of my favorite historical figures are covered here: Alaric the Visigoth, and the Roman generals, Stilcho and Aetius. As a military historian and wargamer, I've always been fascinated with the accomplishments of the Late Imperial Roman Army of the West and its successor, the Patrican Roman Army. One of my childhood memories include the Battle of Chalons (The Catalaunian Fields) where Aetius defeats Attila's Huns.
