The subject of this book did her most important work as a folklorist and creative writer in St. Joseph, Missouri between 1890 and 1910. She had grown up there at mid-century when frontiersmen, Indians, and African-American slaves all came together in northwest Missouri. Despite restrictive roles for Victorian elite white women, the author mixed with Indians and Blacks to record what she thought were fading cultures.
This book is quite competently researched and written, but there seems simply to be a dearth of information directly concerning the life of its subject. Therefore the book is padded with peripheral information and, in my opinion, needs more substance.… (mehr)
