Started out slow, got slightly better, then I just started skipping the long, boring, descriptive paragraphs...waiting for more dialogue. Should be called he book of dullness and cures...except there is no helping this one.

(mehr)

This one took me a bit to go through because it got tedious and I kept putting it aside. I picked it up because the first chapter is pretty engaging--a female doctor in Venecia fighting the guild, handling her mother, wondering about her lost father. Unfortunately, the only part of that opening that sticks around is the last one. After Gabriella leaves Venecia, it becomes a cycle--travel to town, worry about her father, meet another doctor, worry about her father, have something bad happen, worry about her father, depart for next town, worry about her father...repeat. There were some really beautiful moments of writing and towards the end, once Gabriella loses her companions it shakes up the plot a bit and was quite enjoyable, but that middle section took a lot of energy out of the book for me. Read for the scenery and period moments, but feel free to skim the interim city tours.… (mehr)

I got this book for free through Goodreads First Reads. And let me be frank, that was months ago. This was not an easy read. On the other hand, it was a beautiful and melancholic book. The ending seemed to clash with the mood of the book, being so upbeat and jovial. All in all, I would recommend reading this book if you like incongruous endings and roller coaster rides of emotions. Also crying.
