Kurzbiographie
Emma Magdalena Rosalia Maria Josephina Barbara, Baroness Orczy, known as Emmuska, was born in Hungary, the daughter of Baron Felix Orczy, a landed aristocrat and well-known composer and conductor, and his wife Countess Emma Wass. She was educated in Brussels, Paris, and London, and exhibited her art work in the Royal Academy. In 1894, she married Montagu Barstow, a British clergyman and artist, and they worked together as illustrators and jointly published an edition of Hungarian folk tales. Orczy became famous in 1905 with the publication of her novel The Scarlet Pimpernel (originally a play co-written with her husband). Its background of the French Revolution and swashbuckling hero, Sir Percy Blakeney, was to prove immensely popular. Sequel books followed and numerous film and TV versions have been made with the first in 1934, produced by Alexander Korda, another Hungarian. Baroness Orczy also wrote detective and adventure stories. She inherited her family’s estate of Tarna-Ors in Hungary but continued to live in England until the end of World War I, when she and her husband settled in Monte Carlo.

I'm quite surprised this book appears on so many classic romance lists, because I'm not even sure if it was a romance.

It's a story of beautiful Marguerite, called the most intelligent woman in Europe, who married a very stupid, but extremely rich man, Sir Percy Blakeney. Their marriage is not a happy one, they are disappointed in one another and they hardly even speak. Marguerite is blackmailed into helping a French agent to discover the identity of a mysterious English hero, the Scarlet Pimpernel. Then, feeling guilty about what she'd done, she goes to France to save the great man.

I had two main problems with this book: first, most of the plot didn't make any sense whatsoever. Why did the Pimpernel's people keep writing notes to one another, why didn't they simply talk? They were oficially friends, why didn't they visit each other? All this plot at the ball was stupid. Next - Marguerite went to France to help her hero and she did absolutely nothing, she didn't even try to help the Pimpernel. The French agent was trying to catch a dangerous, elusive enemy - so he rented the slowest possible carriage, which Margueritecan could easily follow on foot? It is all so silly and pointless, that I kept rolling my eyes. The second problem was that the book was generally quite boring. It felt much longer than it really was.

I'm really sorry that we didn't get Sir Percy's perspective, I'm sure it would make this book much more interesting and deeper.

Generally, I didn't enjoy this book very much, but I'm glad I finally read it.

I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for a review here and on my blog Samwise Reviews. It was my first introduction to the Teahouse Detective, and going into it I had no idea what it was about and had never heard of this character or author before. It was definitely light, simple reading, nothing too deep or complicated. I enjoyed it, but the cases weren't gripping or passionate. The characters sat at a table and discussed 13 different cases, and while they were different and had unexpected endings, I found this lacked the excitement you would find in Sherlock Holmes. It was a good way to pass the time, but I'm not sure I would seek out other books in this series.

This also worked for the "Character Who Wears Glasses" part of my 2020 reading challenge.

I am a few chapters into the book and noticing that the narrative tone is very pro-aristocrat, which feels odd for my time. I guess the Baroness lived at a time when wealth and education were less morally compromised in our imagination. The story is more adventurous, less philosophical.

Further on the story becomes more engrossing. The action is attention-grabbing, and the machinations of Chauvelin, the compromised position of Lady Marguerite, combine to create a higher level of tension. I also notice that the identity of the Scarlet Pimpernel remains hidden, unlike the film. In fact, the point of view stays almost exlusively with Marguerite, which adds to the layer of mystery, but sometimes detracts from the sense of plot.

As I finish the story, it seems that the best part was in the middle: Marguerite's climactic confrontation with Percy, her discovery, and then her rapid adventure to France. I see all the elements that made the Leslie Howard film so powerful and atmospheric. But the final heroic act stretches the imagination a little too far.

The Publisher Says: A classic collection of mysteries by the author of The Scarlet Pimpernel

Mysteries! There is no such thing as a mystery in connection with any crime, provided intelligence is brought to bear upon its investigation.

So says a rather down-at-heel elderly gentleman to young Polly Burton of the Evening Observer, in the corner of the ABC teashop on Norfolk Street one afternoon. Once she has forgiven him for distracting her from her newspaper and luncheon, Miss Burton discovers that her interlocutor is as brilliantly gifted as he is eccentric—able to solve mysteries that have made headlines and baffled the finest minds of the police without once leaving his seat in the teahouse. As the weeks go by, she listens to him unravelling the trickiest of puzzles and solving the most notorious of crimes, but still one final mystery remains: the mystery of the old man in the corner himself.

The Old Man in the Corner is a classic collection of mysteries, featuring the Teahouse Detective - a contemporary of Sherlock Holmes, with a brilliant mind and waspish temperament to match that of Conan Doyle's creation.

I RECEIVED A DRC FROM THE PUBLISHER VIA EDELWEISS+. THANK YOU.

My Review
: The stories are much of a muchness when read at a gulp, so don't do that! Space them out, one a week or so, and they become less predictable and more pleasantly familiar. I made the mistake of gulping and paid the price of thinking, halfway through, that I would not be finishing the read. I took a long time off, and mirabile dictu, returned with a happy heart.

Pushkin Vertigo does a lot of excellent mystery publishing, though I suspect these very old-fashioned tales won't be bestsellers. They should please us Golden Agers who read Mary Roberts Rinehart.

Kindle editions are only $9.99, and honestly if read as they were originally published...occasionally...you can't have better value for money spent.
