Originally published in 1940 this remains a classical work of Irish history. It is to date the most concise historical account of the Irish Free State Senate from its creation in 1922 until its abolition in 1936. The book is beautifully written and is well referenced throughout and contains a great deal of biographical material about the Senators who served in it as well as detailing the various electoral contests between 1922 and 1936. The author was clearly a supporter of those who supported the Treaty and who supported the Pro-Treaty forces during the Civil War and was a firm critic of de Valera and much of subsequent Fianna Fáil policy. This observation about potential bias should not make other readers reluctant about acquiring the book.… (mehr)
