- The Panama Canal Company was formed on July 1, 1951 and handled all non-governmental activities of the Panama Canal. Governmental functions were performed by the Canal Zone Government. At this time the Company also absorbed the former Panama Railroad Company. On September 27, 1979, both the Panama Canal Company and the Canal Zone Government were superseded by the Panama Canal Commission. The Canal Zone was an unorganized territory of the United States and handed over to Panama at this time.
