 Mystery Book Discussion
 Sara Paretsky
Sara Paretsky—Critical Mass Hyde Parker and store favorite Sara Paretsky joins us for a discussion of her latest V I Warshawski novel, Critical Mass. V.I. Warshawski’s closest friend in Chicago is the Viennese-born doctor Lotty Herschel, who lost most of her family in the Holocaust. Lotty escaped to London in 1939 on the Kindertransport with a childhood playmate, Kitty Saginor Binder. When Kitty’s daughter finds her life is in danger, she calls Lotty, who, in turn, summons V.I. to help. The daughter’s troubles turn out to be just the tip of an iceberg of lies, secrets, and silence, whose origins go back to the mad competition among America, Germany, Japan and England to develop the first atomic bomb. The secrets are old, but the people who continue to guard them today will not let go of them without a fight.

Sara Paretsky Critical Mass Book Launch With special guests: Girls from Sisters4Science Swedish American Museum, 5211 N. Clark St. Critical Mass exposes V I Warshawski to a long-buried piece of the history of the atom bomb. While doing a favor for Lotty, she stumbles across a dead man and becomes enmeshed in a chain of events that becomes more perplexing at each turn. One of the central characters to emerge in V I's investigation is a Viennese woman physicist caught up in the excitement and the danger of the quest for splitting the atom. Booklist says, "Vic is at her stubborn, reckless, compassionate best in this complicated page-turner about selfish secrets passed down through generations. Paretsky is on a roll lately, her long-running, trailblazing series at its most dynamic since the early days." Because Sara is passionate about exposing girls to the excitement of scientific work, she supports Sisters4Science, an after-school program that gives middle school girls hands on exposure to experimental science. Girls from S4S will come to the reading and make a short presentation on their program. Sara will donate her profits from book sales at this event to S4S.
