When Daniel and Janet mention that they are going to march in a parade to honor Martin Luther King, Ben and Amy want to find out more about this famous person. Daniel explains who King was and why a day is set aside to honor him.
This book sort of brings children back in time to a time where civil rights were the center of everything. Some children may know this day as only a day off of school, it is important to know impact Martin Luther King Jr. has had on society. He is apart of the reason why we are not segregated today. This book can open their mind to a world where they may not be able to sit by their best friend just because they have a different skin color.
I would expand by having children explore holidays of their own culture and share them with the class. Another idea could be to have children bring dishes of their culture into the classroom.… (mehr)
