Looks at American women who believed that the U.S. should enter the war against the Axis Powers in the years before Pearl Harbor (1939-1941). Isolationist sentiment was strong in the U.S. - prominent spokesmen like Charles Lindburgh attempted to convince Americans that the country should stay out of the war. Internationalists, those who believed that the U.S. had to enter the war or see democracy around the world vanish, were usually well educated men - often military or governemnt men. Very few women were internationalists - it was almost assumed that women, because they were women, should abhorr violence and work towards peace. Those women who defied these conventions were bitterly attacked - and these are the women that this book concentrates on. It looks at their activities and writings and networking.… (mehr)
