Leriano: I'm suffering and want to die because I love Laureola. I'd kill myself, but then she would be blamed.
Laureola: I'm sorry for you, but I can't get with you because it would be damaging to my honor, and I would rather die than lose my honor. Stop writing to me.
(Laureola's father, the king, imprisons her and sentences her to death because she is suspected of meeting Leriano at night. Leriano and an army break her out, and once thousands of people die, Laureola's name is cleared.)
Leriano: Now that I don't have those battles to distract me, I'm back to suffering. Laureola, hook up with me or I'll die.
Laureola: Seriously, I'd rather die than lose my honor. Stop writing to me.
Leriano: (dies)
I read this book right after finishing La Celestina, and I found it hard to believe that they were written at about the same time. This book feels very medieval in comparison, though the section in praise of women was refreshing. It was very repetitive sometimes (how many times did I need to be reminded that a virtuous death was better than a dishonorable life?), but it did grow on me towards the end. All the same, I think I need to look for something that doesn't end in a love-related death (or several) next.… (mehr)
