The Color Thief: A Family's Story of Depression von Andrew Fusek Peters
I liked the illustrations in this book, and the ways that the kid and dad describe the dad's depression. It has a happy ending...and not that I don't like happy endings, especially in kids books, but I tend to appreciate children's books about depression more when they accept the possibility of relapse/future depression.
Review:
This story chronicles a young boy's struggle as the his father becomes sick and has all of the color removed from his life. His once happy father rarely smiles and prefers to spend most of the day in bed. Throughout the book, the young boy and his family help his father in whatever way they can as the young boy struggles with feeling like he did something wrong.
Critique:
This realistic fiction picture book does an excellent job if explaining the concept of depression to young readers. Depression is a mental illness that is not often talked or addressed in mainstream society. However, this book takes the issue and presents it in a way that in understandable both for young readers, and the general populous.
Use:
1. One way to utilize this book would be to have it available for any students who may have a parent who suffers from depression. If it is ok with the parent, the teacher can send the book home with the student to read through with their parents.
2. Another way to use this book would be to read it out loud as a way to introduce the issue of mental illness, something that is often not talked about, to the classroom. This would be a good way to develop critical literacy and awareness among students about what depression and other mental illnesses look like.

A boy tells a story about his fathers struggle with depression. At first his dads life is full of color, but one day it suddenly turns gray. The boy misses his dad dearly and does not know how to help him. The father reminds his son over and over that it is not the boys fault. Eventually with help from doctors and medicine the father is happy again and the color in his life comes back. The central message of the story is that depression is a thief of the color in ones life.
