I would give the story itself 1 star and the illustration 5 stars, hence the 3 star rating. It's unfortunate that the author couldn't come up with a story that does justice to the fantastic artwork. I really wish this was a wordless book.

Skelly and Femur is written and illustrated by Jimmy Pickerings. This is a wonderful book about a young girl names Skelly and her dog, Femur. The illustrations are brilliant and remind me of The Nightmare Before Christmas. The characters are skeleton like. The whole book is Halloween themed, the front cover is primarily black, purple, and orange. There is very little text on each page so this would be a great book to read to a Kindergarten or first grade classroom, especially near Halloween. The book is about Skelly and Femur, who live in a house on a hill. Suddenly all of their stuff begins disappearing in the house. All of the people who live in the house go on a hunt for their missing things and end up in the attic. They discover that a mouse has taken all of their stuff and moved it up there. Then Skelly and Femur eat cheese with the mouse. I loved that the illustrations told the story and the text was used to accompany it. There is so much expression and detail in each picture it seems like there is live movement within each drawing.… (mehr)

Gothic and spooktacular illustrations, reminiscent of Tim Burton's A Nightmare Before Christmas, capture an eager audience in Jimmy Pickering's Skelly the Skeleton Girl.

We join Skelly as she searches for the owner of a lost bone. But who could it possibly belong to? Let's follow as she questions her skeleton fish, pet bat, man-eating plants, ghosts, the spider next door, and more. The trail seems to grow cold until she hears a noise and solves the mystery.

A charming tale beautifully rendered in full color using mixed media. For spooky, but not frightening, fun any time of the year. Sure to please children, especially girls, ages 4 - 7.
