- Amy Reading grew up in Pennsylvania and Washington state. She worked for three years in book publishing before leaving to go to graduate school. She received her Ph.D. in American studies from Yale in 2007. She hit upon the idea for The Mark Inside while writing her dissertation on truth and deception in American autobiography, which contains a chapter on swindlers’ memoirs. The Mark Inside was published by Knopf in March 2012. Amy lives in upstate New York in a 170-year-old house. She writes upstairs in a dark blue room. Downstairs, she homeschools her two children with her husband, Jay Farmer.

The Mark Inside: A Perfect Swindle, a Cunning… von Amy Reading
The story regarding the con was interesting but author peppered story with other cons. Very hard to read as there was no flow from one con to the other.
Not engaging enough to hold my attention-gave up part way through.
This is the story of J. Frank Northfleet who got himself conned in 1919 and then set about hunting down the men who conned him (and a good deal of other con artists) over several years. Interesting background about con artistry and the background of these (mostly) true events.
