Even before the rise of post-modern literature, there were meta-novels which blurred traditional boundaries between author, narrator, characters and reader. Recami takes this idea further by choosing as protagonist the humble figure of a proofreader. The manuscript that this obsessive and not too likeable character is working on is a noirish thriller of dubious quality whose pages alternate with the proofreader's rambling soliloquies. The proofreader soon convinces himself that the draft contains hidden messages and threats directed at him. As obsession takes over completely, the neat distinction between the manuscript and the narrator's tale crumbles, carrying characters and reader with it.

This novel is quirky and original, but is ultimately the victim of its own narrative tricks. The drudgery of proofreading is portrayed so realistically that each return of the manuscript brings with it a sense of relief - changes of gear which are somewhat disconcerting. Ultimately, the novel raises more questions than it answers. Is it a horror story or a thriller with an original twist? A satire on the publishing world? A dense metaphor? All of these? Perhaps this is the whole point of the novel, as the readers become themselves protagonists and authors in search of a meaning.

(mehr)
