Fritz Redlich (1910–2004)

This two volume work is a sociology of the system which was operating in Germany from the Middle Ages until the Napoleonic War of Independence in 1813. His research was exhaustive, and the more modern system of drafting for National Service as well as voluntary recruitment, certainly replaced a system that often descended to press gangs. It is a tribute to Redlich's effort that there has not been much of an attempt to replace this work. Sadly, the prose is not lively, and though the book was originally published in German no translator has been recorded. It would certainly have been an accomplishment.… (mehr)
