Monty Python aficionados already know that the troupe incorporated the practice and ideas of philosophy into its skits and films; the best essays in this collection show how philosophy as an intellectual enterprise can benefit from an infusion of absurdist humor. The Pythons excelled at language games, played fast and loose with both existentialism and positivism, and mocked fundamentalism and sanctimony in all its forms. If, as Gary Hardcastle suggests, we think of philosophy not as a search for truth but as a ‘manufacturing facility for conceptual schemes’—ways for us to think about the world—then the Pythonesque is as good a conceptual scheme as any, and surely better than most.
