Frank Richards (3) (1883–1961)

Fascinating, absorbing first person memoir by a Private in the British Army, during the first decade of the 20th Century. Serving with the Royal Welch Fusiliers, Frank Richards describes in great detail his life: the heat and medical problems, relations with the local inhabitants including all the many services and items that could be bought very cheaply, his work as a signaller and the travel involves - including many interesting anecdotes. An account from a member of the "other ranks" of service in the Royal Welch Fusiliers during World War I. There is a great deal of mud, grit and black humour in the story, as well as some unflinching opinions, good and bad, on the officers of the regiment and the generals of the war. It's rather interesting to read certain parts of it against Robert Graves' "Goodbye to All That." Graves had been an officer in the same regiment, and indeed is mentioned a few times in the book (positively, along with Siegfried Sassoon). Most history doesn't have the sheer amount of mud this one does, so it is (curious choice of words) refreshing.… (mehr)

« Old Soldiers never die » di Frank Richards giunse all'editore inglese a quindici anni dalla fine della prima guerra mondiale, con una prefazione di Robert Graves, romanziere e saggista di fama mondiale. Lesse il manoscritto, e lo fece pubblicare, il poeta Thomas Stearns Eliot che lo giudicò «il più bel libro di guerra scritto dopo il conflitto». Eliot vide giusto: nella letteratura su quella guerra, la più terribile fra l'umanità aveva conosciuto, questo libro portava di nuovo: per la prima volta soldato semplice raccontava la guerra dal suo punto di vista, falsi eroismi, sulla lingua e con un pizzico di umorismo schiettamente britannico. Proprio per queste caratteristiche di sincerità il libro non fu mai pubblicato in Italia, anche se aveva ottenuto successo negli Stati e in Inghilterra, in Francia e in Germania. Gli editori italiani dissero che era troppo «inglese» per essere apprezzato. E sì che anche da noi andava per la maggiore uno scrittore come Kipling, della cui nostalgia per «i bei vecchi tempi dell'esercito regolare e delle campagne in India» sono intrise di molte pagine di «Old Soldiers never die» Il soldato Frank Ricbards, « Dick » per i compagni, partecipa durante quattro anni alle grandi battaglie del fronte francese. Lucido e sicuro di sé, acido e sfrontato sembra affrontare le terribili prove con una specie spirito sportivo. Vede morire amici, « vecchi soldati », molti nemici, e quando può, beve, gioca, va in cerca polli e di donne. A soldati, a uomini così farà appello Churchill vent'anni dopo.… (mehr)
