Kurzbiographie
"Mr. Rodman encountered, sought out and communed with some of the best known creative people of the 20th century. Born into a monied family in New York, he grew into a rebellious young man and ended up as a famous champion of the Western Hemisphere’s folk arts, particularly Haitian paintings, which he called a 'crystallization of joy.' Intermediate stops included editing one of the most successful anthologies of modern poetry, writing essays and books on travel, and rocking the modern art establishment by branding Abstract Expressionism 'the cerebral put-ons of the avant-garde.'"

Every year I try to read at least one book of poetry. Often it goes down like sugar, with collections by Eliot or Whitman or Thomas. But this anthology opened my eyes to some now forgotten poets, ones who may have been read a few decades ago but no longer. Archibald Flemming, Frederic Prokosch, Archibalb MacLeish, and Wilfred Owen. There were dry stretches where I seemed to connect with nothing, but the last two collections were real revelations. Additionally, the introduction was a very scholarly look at poetry and its history. The words in the title could confuse you, as there really isn't anything new or particularly modern for the current time, but that may be what most appealed to me.… (mehr)

This anthology presents a wide range of 20th century poets, many in translation. Many of the translations were in prose. Nothing really grabbed me, but I have a very narrow taste in poetry tending toward the lyrical and the oriental.

I released this one back into the wild. It reminded me of being at a party talking to a drunk famous person—you really want to excuse yourself, but at the same time you don't want to miss anything good. Rodman has a bit in his introduction where he talks about how writers have gotten forums to talk about their work since the Second World War, but artists as yet haven't... well, I came of age at a time when artists had plenty of opportunity to discuss their craft and motivations, so maybe I'm not the intended audience here.

But most of them came off as slightly self-involved, heavy on the theory and not enough (let's be honest) on the gossip. I did like the snark between Philip Johnson and Frank Lloyd Wright (Johnson said that his main reaction to Fallingwater was having to pee). And I loved learning about Sister Mary Corita Kent, the Op Art nun. If this hadn't been a library book I'd probably have kept it around and dipped in now and again. Perhaps the book and I will cross paths again someday.
