An 11 year old takes her scooter Zip and sets out from Washington state to Austin Texas. Along the way she meets, Circe, Tiresias, Calypso, etc. Though not in classical form. Past magical realism, this doesn't quite hit fantasy, so it's aim is a bit uncertain.
½It took me an embarassingly long time to remember that this was a re-telling of "The Odyssey" because I was thinking "hmm Circe is an interesting name" but then it took me a little longer to remember. Overall this was a sold middle grade book with elements of fantasy. Lyssa learns to believe in herself and that home is where the heart is. Which is not exactly the message of "The Odyssey" but there are large parts of that book which are entirely unsuitable for adaptation into a middle grade book. This was very solid though.… (mehr)
