We view this fantastical journey through the eyes of a loveable character - with the exception of one chapter. 25-year-old Leiyn is one of many rangers at The Lodge. She is mentored by Lodgemaster Tadeo and best friends with Ranger Isla. We follow Leiyn's views of the world: regarding the people she meets, the conflicts between groups, and the life lessons along the way. We also learn about Leiyn's cursed magic (mahia) and its impact on her life. Not far into the story, a dismissed gut instinct results in a great tragedy that drastically changes Leiyn in a matter of weeks.

The book contains flashbacks, depicting Leiyn's childhood and her life at The Lodge. These are not in order since they refer to the present time; thus, the chapters are very clear in summarising the chapter with one to three words so the narrative is easy to follow. We readers also gain more insight into Leiyn's character throughout: she is a survivor, free-spirited, and resilient. Over time, Leiyn's character arc stems from her mahia's interference and Leiyn begins to question the curse.

The magic and characters in this world are extremely well described; we are pulled into the epic fantasy as if there is such a world. There are great descriptions of fighting scenes, the careful decisions by Leiyn as she uses her bow and arrows and her small knives. And ultimately, there are tragedies as well as dark visuals, but with a respectful approach towards the things Leiyn sees since we are viewing these events through her eyes.

As mentioned, the story follows Leiyn and everything she experiences: we learn about other characters based on Leiyn's accounts, for example. However, there is one chapter that explains Leiyn's birth twenty-five years ago which sets the tone for the entire story. We readers learn something Leiyn doesn't know. This makes for an interesting read since Leiyn's opinions and decisions are based on a fact she has longed believed in and there is nothing we can do as readers but to watch Leiyn grow. If the information we readers know from this chapter were omitted, we would read the story a completely different way.

A huge thank you to the author for letting me help refine the book, through AuthorsXP. The book is really well-written with a roller coaster of emotions throughout as Leiyn undertakes a tough literal and metaphorical journey in a really short space of time alongside likeable characters.

Poor sentence structure, exposition dump in chapter 1.

Wow, what can I say about this book other than I couldn't put it down. I was so invested in the story and characters that I am heartbroken I have to wait for book 2. This a must read novel.
