Martha Sanders

I read a great deal, and memoirs are one of my preferred genres. This is an apparently self-published memoir. The author is quite talented, and this book read well; it is reminiscent of The Glass Castle and Angela's Ashes. This is the account of the author's childhood and adolescence growing up in a very poor family in the Arkansas delta. I truly found it hard to put this book down, and often found myself thinking about it when I wasn't reading it ... Ms. Sanders' obvious intelligence and tenacity are admirable and inspiring.

The only reason I gave this memoir three stars (rather than four) is that this memoir could have benefited from some careful editing, the writing style is rather unpolished and amateurish, and the ending was rather sudden, with little in the way of any conclusion or indication that a further volume might be forthcoming.
