Alaskan writer Eva Saulitis was a marine biologist, who studied the killer whales of Prince William Sound, Kenai Fjords and the Aleutian Islands since 1986. She received a M.S. from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1993 and a MFA from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1996. She was the mehr anzeigen author and co-author of numerous scientific publications, but became dissatisfied with the objective language and rigid methodology of science and turned to creative writing. Her books include two collections of poetry entitled Many Ways to Say It and Prayer in Wind, a collection of essays entitled Leaving Resurrection: Chronicles of a Whale Scientist, and two memoirs entitled Into Great Silence: Discovery and Loss Among Vanishing Orcas and Becoming Earth. A fine, fine book: profound, intense, and beautifully written.
warning: the "loss" in the title refers in part to the results of the Exxon Valdez oil spill... which makes parts of this book very bleak (though still more than worth one's time).
Eva Saulitis shares her memoir of discovery and loss among vanishing Orcas in Into Great Silence. A biologist’s scientific eagerness meets human emotions such as loss and grief. Eva began her whale research in Alaska since 1986 in Prince William Sound. Instead of numbers or categories these giant fish show they’re a family. The effects of the Exxon Valdez oil spill of 1989: a sudden stop in giving birth to calfs was fatal to the group. Into Great Silence got beautiful storytelling, a heartcry to protect our fellow creatures. It’s a memoir from past experiences mixed with recent personal encounters with possible extinction.
