Hal Schick

I was given a free copy of this book from Hal Schick and Black Rose Writing. This was a very interesting book about a young white boy growing up in the North before the Civil Rights Movement. It showed how he changed and grew as he learned more about black families and how they were treated and how they were the same in many ways. This was a nice story about growing up and learning and making changes.

The author brings to life the racial attitudes of the 1950s in both the North and South. When the white children make a trip to the South they encounter Jim Crow laws and are themselves subjected to taunts and bullies simply because they are from the North.

A nice popcorn read in the Sam Spade/Phillip Marlowe and femme fatale detective style fiction. A bit flat, a bit predictable and left me looking for a bit more. An easy read if you're looking for something you can pick up and put down time and again but nothing that makes it stand out from a crowded field of noir novels.

This is an okay book for me
The characters were entertaining, the twists and turns kept me reading and wanting to know what's next....but
It felt like something is missing, I can't put my finger on it. It's hard to explain but I was expecting more from this book.
