- Evamaria Schmidt was born in Dessau, Germany, and studied classical archaeology and philosophy at the University of Jena. After graduating, she became a scientific assistant to the archaeologist Ludger Alscher at Humboldt University in Berlin and earned her doctoral degree with a thesis on Greek sculpture heads of the 4th century BC. In 1961, Dr. Schmidt fled to West Germany, where she worked at various institutions, eventually joining the Department of Architecture at the Technical University of Munich. In 1980, she joined the Faculty of Arts of the University of Augsburg. From 1983 until her retirement in 1991, she was one of the few women professors of classical archeology. She was the author of about a dozen books, including The Great Altar of Pergamon (1961) and History of the Caryatid (1978).
