Luis Alonso Schokel (1920–1998)

Prolific scholar, writer and teacher in Spanish, Schokel works in the Roman Catholic tradition. Many of his works have been translated into English with good effect. His editorial edition of this Spanish Bible is worth owning just for his, or his supervised, annotations. He makes all of the Bible easier to understand and takes difficult theological topics and puts them into easier to understand concepts. The Bible is always a difficult mountain to climb, but Schokel makes it worthwhile, even fun. He has written on the Psalms, a magisterial work on the Hebrew Prophets (one of my most prized pair of volumes in my library), collaborations with other scholars on introductory books on the Old Testament. His specialty area is the Old Testament but this book is valuable for me since it covers introductions, and notes to the New Testament as well. I can't recommend this book highly enough. especially for readers of basic Spanish who want direct access to sound Biblical theology presented in a logical, organized way.… (mehr)
