Kurzbiographie
Philippa Duke Schuyler was born in New York City, the only child of Black journalist George Schuyler and Josephine Cogdell Schuyler, a white Texan and former actress hopeful. Philippa became famous as a child in the 1930s as a result of her precocious musical talent, intellect, and mixed race parentage. Her mother was a stage mother who entered Philippa into music competitions, public recitals, and radio broadcasts by the age of four. She performed two piano recitals at the New York World's Fair at the age of eight. She studied with pianists Paul Wittgenstein and Josef Hofmann and composer Dean Dixon. At age eleven, she became the youngest member of the National Association of American Composers and Conductors. She toured constantly throughout the USA and the world. In addition to English, she spoke French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and German. In adulthood, her concert schedule declined, and she followed her father into journalism. She went on assignment as a war correspondent to South Vietnam in 1967 and was killed there in the crash of a U.S. Army helicopter at age 35. Philippa was the author of five books based on her worldwide travels, including Adventures in Black and White (1960) and Kingdom of Dreams (1966). A major biography of her, Composition in Black and White by Kathryn Talalay, appeared in 1996.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this fantastic memoir-travelogue written by American concert pianist and composer Philippa Duke Schuyler. Her story chronicles her unique experience of traveling internationally as a bi-racial woman in the 1950’s as she shared her musical gift over a most inspiring global musical trek. Her writing is refreshing as she shares a myriad of experiences and conversations with authentically human characters around the globe. She shares common and culturally specific customs with ease. She handles unexpected personal encounters and scheduled engagements with the same style, grace, and dignity. She is a good storyteller and shares reflections of compassion, love and business integrity surprisingly at times with the curiosity of an ingénue and at other times as a shrewd businesswoman full of wit and charm. Overall you get the sense she observes, questions, and listens well. She was as courageous as she was gifted.
I did receive this eBook as an early reviewer giveaway courtesy of Library Thing; however, I did purchase a paperback copy to share - I enjoyed the book that much. I look forward to reading Ms. Duke-Schuyler’s other works. Ms. Betts, thank you for your editing efforts to republish this timeless treasure.

This book is a fascinating window into another time. While at the surface it may seem a loose collection of stories of once famous and not so famous people, as you dig into the stories so much more is found. The autobiographical nature of the work makes the stories that much more compelling as you can almost place yourself in the young artists shoes with each new earnest expression of the complexities of politics and travel. Truly worth the read for a fresh (if vintage) perspective and a solid coming of age diary style autobiography. Even if the overall impression leaves you with a sense of the mundane realism of glamourous occasions, that feeling alone is worth the read.… (mehr)

Is Philippa Schuyler important in history? This book is a transcription of her journal entries while traveling around the world, giving concerts, and meeting some important historical figures such as the Queen of England and Dr. Schweitzer. I did not find the author's life or the journal stories very interesting. The book is her story and the locations that she visited without much context of world events or historical timeline that this falls within. Summary - rambling collection of personal diary entries which are not that interesting. The ebook isn't easy to access. I understand DRM necessity - but my review copy was on a very short lease of usage, only 10 days.… (mehr)
