Failed to lure me past the opening chapters.

Blurbed as "dark, gritty, adult fantasy" which it might actually be, but to me the very beginning felt like the setup for a paranormal romance instead*, and by that point I still didn't care enough about the characters to forge ahead and see if my suspicions were accurate or not.

* Might sound nit-picky but yes there will usually be differences in the tone/mood and emphasis that can make the difference between a book I'll read eagerly and what would be, to me, a snooze-fest.… (mehr)

Book Review: I Quit Being a Christian to Follow Jesus by Alan Scott

book-review-i-quit-being-a-christian-to-follow-jesus-by-alan-scott-b
This book is a study centered around the book of Luke and each chapter starts off with a short passage from Luke to read. Also included are personal stories, a few quotes from other Christians and lots and lots of questions.

One of its biggest pluses is all the questions. It seems to be loaded with them. These questions are one way this book helps you to think differently.

I enjoyed Mr. Scott’s writing style and found it conversational, pleasant, and not stuffy but real and authentic. Plenty of times it made me smile, too.

The author includes different perspectives or “spins” on the topics that he has chosen to talk about from Luke but I did not feel any of them were unbiblical. Instead I found it to just be a challenge to think and act differently or even just to think, period.

One of my biggest takeaways was that there isn’t just one way to view anything.

If you enjoy books that challenge your thinking then you should give this book a look!

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the author himself. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commision’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”

One of the earlier publications to provide detailed instructional advice suitable for school boys and novice players. There are chapters devoted to all major facets of the game such as kicking, marking, handball, spoiling, tackling, position play and interestingly, five years before the 1970 VFL Grand Final which supposedly saw the birth of 'play-on football', there are sections on 'Play-On Football' and the importance of handball. Illustrated with diagrams and drawings.

As the book jacket claims there are similarities to The Andromeda Strain. An interesting take on the "what if?" aspects of biological warfare. I found the story interesting, and plausible. Good older science fiction.
