Allen Shawn grew up in New York City and currently lives in Vermont, where he is on the faculty of Bennington College. He started composing music at the age of ten, and has produced a large catalogue of orchestral, chamber, and piano works, as well as music for ballet, theater, and film. Leonard Bernstein: An American Musician (Jewish Lives) von Allen Shawn

I thought this was a very enlightening and easily-read summary of Bernstein's life. It also seemed even-handed, acknowledging his genius and his abilities without ignoring his flaws and faults.

Professionally Bernstein was a conductor, pianist, composer and teacher. But, he was also a powerful cultural and political voice and symbol. The Jerusalem Post called this book “An engrossing portrait of a gifted and conflicted man.”

Wish I Could Be There: Notes From a Phobic Life von Allen Shawn

This is not the typical memoir; it's very detailed, almost like a textbook. This guy is really smart, but sometimes I missed how much his disorder affected him emotionally.
