Lo so, dovrei sentirmi un po' in colpa ma se non avessi saltato un certo numero di parti in cui Tolstoj scrive un trattato di storia e filosofia della storia, anziché un romanzo... non sarei mai arrivata alla fine. E sarebbe stato un peccato, perché l'intreccio è appassionante, i personaggi affascinanti e insomma, si capisce perché da così tanto tempo sia annoverato tra i capolavori della letteratura internazionale. Però anche in questo caso, così come per Anna Karenina, mi sono avvalsa di uno dei diritti del lettore secondo D. Pennac, e se anche non ne vado particolarmente fiera rispetto a quando avevo 16 anni mi faccio meno problemi a dirlo ad alta voce.… (mehr)

I kept stumbling over the most breathtaking quotes from this book and decided to buy it, even though I didn't really know what the quotes meant in the context of this story, or these letters. However, after just the introduction and explanation of what the title meant, I was hooked. The sorrow of unrequited love and as a writer to not being allowed to write about the thing that hurts the most. The sincerity in the craft of writing letters and how horribly real it all is. As a writer myself, these letters reminded me of why i fell in love with writing in the first place.

Origineel verslag van een vitalistisch leven in het revolutiejaar 1917 en de daaropvolgende burgeroorlog.
Staccatoachtige stijl van korte laconieke opmerkingen, soms humoristisch gejuxtaposeerd in hun volle droogheid. Het laatste deel "de schrijftafel" vond ik het beste, tevens ook te vermelden het gedegen en verhelderende nawoord van Charles B. Timmer.
Viktor Sjklovski, automechanieker, professor kunstgeschiedenis, literator, soldaat en zelfverklaard expert-detonateur van springstoffen (met bijna fatale afloop!),..... zo'n "uomini universali" en geniale dilettanten genereert de 21ste eeuw niet meer, gefragmenteerd zoals we zijn in onze "striving for excellence concerning the most banale topics!"
