Another in my son's focused listening to stories about Black Hawk. I remembered this one from my childhood as an interesting book & sought it out. Biography written as story, yet with many details which could be corroborated. Shows early life experiences which led to his strengths as a leader and freedom fighter. Also covers war years, in less detail, ending with him remaining in Iowa. End material includes a chronology which ties in with events in U.S. history, study questions, suggested activities & other readings, and dictionary of words which may be new to the intended age group.
My only criticism is the consistent use of the word "squaw" for women and "warrior" for men. I suggest any reader of this book, at a minimum, substitute 'woman' in place of the pejorative "squaw."… (mehr)
