A lavish and comprehensive history of the game comprising 396 pages, commissioned by the AFL to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the game. Divided into 5 major thematic sections, containing 28 substantial essays or chapters exploring a very wide range of topics covering the game’s history, development, and characteristics. The main content has been written by 21 different authors, under the overall editorship of Geoff Slattery. The authors are journalists, historians, a contemporary AFL player, Adam Goodes, and one piece, reproduced from a 1948 publication, is by early VFA and VFL star player Peter Burns. The scope of the book does cover all states, mainly at major league level, but most prominence is given to the game’s history in Melbourne. The folio size of this book ensures the many high quality images are beautifully presented. The sections by the historians are footnoted with references to sources, and there is a general index for the book overall. Interviews with all living winners presented in question and answer format, with a summary of career statistics and achievements for all winners and short biographies of all deceased winners, with reminiscences by some who knew them.
