A nova trilogia lançada por Eduardo Spohr é um um romance histórico com várias qualidades. Apresenta bons personagens coadjuvantes, sendo que alguns também são personagens históricos - e uma boa descrição e narrativa dos diferentes cenários e costumes da época em se passa a história de Georgios, o grego que se tornaria Santo cristão.
Tem boas passagens, sobretudo o quarto final do livro.
Como sou apaixonado pela figura mítica de São Jorge e muito fã das narrativas e histórias passadas na Roma Antiga - adoro livros como "Guerreiros de Roma", "Under the Eagle" e "Aguia da Nona" - decidi encarar a trilogia.
A edição é simples, porém bonita. Acompanha com cards e mapas, tudo com valor acessível, valeu muito a pena. Agora é aguardar os outros dois calhamaços.

I honestly don't understand the hype of this book. It was pretty much like reading a giant fan fiction of a crossover between Saint Seiya and the Bible. The book did have a lot of potential and happened in a pretty cool universe, which happens to be the world where we live in, but in a more unstable state, in the eminence of a war breakthrough (if you think about it, is not very far from reality) in addition to a "spiritual" world, where angels and demons live in eternal conflict. The main character, a renegade angel named Ablon, wants to end the conflict between heaven and hell at the same time that he aims for the revenge of his fallen comrades and the protection of human kind. This would have the potential to make a very nice story... if it wasn't for the way it was written.

It isn't unclear. On the contrary, the writing style is quite descriptive and somewhat simple. What ruined the book for me was the excessive use of words that are not very common. And when I mean excessive, I meant to say "3 in every 10 words the author uses are that new word". The book ends up sounding awfully artificial with the mixture of what was supposed to be a formal ancient form of communication and the way young people speak nowadays.

I didn't find the flashbacks very useful for the story itself. They only seem to drag it back, making it actually kinda boring. It gets worse when the narrative form changes to first person's point of view. Ablon, when telling his story, seems to keep repeating things like "what I have seen with my absolutely awesome-better-than-your eyes" or "when I executed that super powerful move that no human can match" and things similar to that. After a while, it gets annoying and you realize how unnecessary those repetitions were. Okay Ablon, we get it. You are a super powerful entity, we knew that from the first page. YOU DON'T NEED TO REPEAT THIS OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

The plot itself wasn't anything extraordinary or innovative. You can actually see what's coming up next and even how it will end.

Not a bad book overall, but I found it somewhat dull and boring. Definitely not something I would read again.… (mehr)

Sommige mensen beginnen met te vertellen waar het boek over gaat. Ik niet. Als je deze review leest weet je waarschijnlijk al waar het boek over gaat en wil je gewoon weten of het een goed boek is. Dat is wat ik je hier vertel.

Het is niet zo een goed boek.

Maar wel een boek met potentie. Niet alleen naar aanleiding van de achterflap, maar ook tijdens het verhaal merk je dat er meer in had gezeten. Er kon zo veel meer mee gedaan worden.
Of ja, het kon zo veel beter gedaan worden. De schrijver faalt erin om de personages persoonlijkheden te geven. Het hele boek blijven ze nauwelijks meer dan een naam. Ook de gebeurtenissen hebben nooit echte spanning. Geen idee of dit het eerste boek is wat hij heeft geschreven, maar de schrijver bezit gewoon niet genoeg over beschrijvende vaardigheden. Het is allemaal veel te vlak. Het trekt je er niet in.

Iets wat ook niet helpt is de constante flashbacks naar eerdere periodes in het leven van Ablon. Nu ben ik daar in geen enkel boek fan van, maar hier wordt het wel heel bont gemaakt; als je, laten we zeggen, op de 75% van het boek zit zal 25% over de hoofdverhaallijn zijn gegaan. De andere helft breng je door in een ander tijdsperk. Waardoor dit boek soms meer lijkt op een verhalenbundel dan dat het 1 doorlopend verhaal is. Want er is gewoon geen direct verband tussen de rode draad en die flashbacks. In plaats van me dus wat achtergrondinformatie te geven trekt het je dus alleen meer verder uit het verhaal (al lijken de flashbacks wel van een iets hoger niveau te zijn dan van het hoofdverhaal)

De schrijfstijl lijkt meer op een opsomming dan...een verhaal. Omdat de schrijver geen echte sfeer weet te creëren zit je nooit in de wereld en heb je gelijk door dat álles wat genoemd wordt met een reden is. Vooral als hij het amateuristisch doet door opeens naar een ding te verwijzen wat hij al een tijdje niet meer gedaan heeft... 'oh ok, dit gaat dus over een niet al te lange tijd belangrijk zijn. bedankt dat je de verrassing verpest meneer de schrijver!'
Je ziet alles al van ver aankomen. Geen verrassingen omdat je weet dat de schrijver vrijwel nooit dingen schrijft om bv sfeer te creëren, maar dat er altijd een doel achter zit.

Voorspelbaar boek zonder spanning en persoonlijkheid. 3 sterren is misschien te veel, maar 2 is ook weer erg karig want ik heb door het onderwerp er alsnog wel mijn pleziertjes mee gehad. Maar dat is niet het verdienste van de schrijver. 2.5 ster dus eigenlijk, maar naar boven afgerond omdat ik een aardige kerel ben.… (mehr)
