Prof. Peter Stanley, FAHA of UNSW Canberra, is one of Australia's most distinguished military-social historians. Simpsons Donkey von Peter Stanley

This is the story of the donkey who was used by Simpson to carry the wounded at Gallipoli. Based on extensive research, Peter Stanley has imagined what might have happened to the donkey both before and after the battle at Gallipoli and has produced an engaing story that would give children some idea of what the war was like.
Recommended for children aged 9 and up, particularly those who enjoy stories told from an animale's point of view and/or those who enjoy historical fiction.

Australian's of Gen X where taught the Legend of the brave Aussie digger who fought hard and gave his all to the war effort - that we were the best solder in WWI - this books seeks to balance out that view by casting a more realistic eye over the records of the solders in WWI - Peter Stanley comes up with a more realistic view of the ANZAC and balances the Heroic legend against the records of VD, and offences (many very serious) committed by our troops. He does this with a great deal of sympathy to the situation they found themselves in but not the less concludes that some of them were simple bad when they went in and continued that way in the AIF and some the war turned bad.
It has taken me awhile to get through this book - it is written is such away that it is easy to pick up and put down again when you have to other things.
Well worth the effort to read.… (mehr)
