Kurzbiographie
D. E. (Dorothy Emily) Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, into a well-known family, and was educated at home by governesses. Robert Louis Stevenson was her father's cousin. D. E. began writing as a child but had to hide her efforts because her parents disapproved.

Her father also refused to send her to university. In 1913, D.E. came out as a debutante, and two years later published her first book of poetry. In 1914, she married James Reid Peploe, a young captain on leave to recuperate from wounds he received in World War I, with whom she had four children. In 1923 her first novel, Peter West, was published. It was not a success, and she did not publish fiction for the next few years. She was keeping a diary, and one day in the early 1930s, allowed a friend to read it. This woman urged D.E. to publish, and so began the semi-autobiographical series of "Mrs. Tim" novels published between 1934 and 1952, the first being Mrs. Tim of the Regiment.

For the rest of her long career, D.E. Stevenson steadily wrote bestsellers that still delight readers today. She wrote humorous and serious books and even ventured into science fiction. During World War II, she wrote novels such as The Two Mrs. Abbotts (1943) that featured wartime food shortages, German spies, romantic entanglements, and childrearing. After the war, she published several novels that dealt prominently with postwar changes in society, including Mrs. Tim Gets a Job (1947), Kate Hardy (1947), Young Mrs. Savage (1948), Vittoria Cottage (1949), and Summerhills (1956). Five works were published posthumous after the manuscripts were discovered in the Stevenson family attic, including

Jean Erskine's Secret, written 1913-1917;
Emily Dennistoun and Portrait of Saskia, written in the 1920s; and The Fair Miss Fortune, written in the 1930s.

Rezensionen

The sequel to Miss Buncle's Book finds our heroine, now Barbara Abbott, married and looking for a new town to settle down and make a home in. This is still a pleasant read, but is much more meandering and unfocused than the first book, and parts of it feel more dated, too. (While the first book is hardly explicitly feminist, there were lots more hinky things about gender and physical appearance in this book. That, together with the weird voodoo fetish doll interlude and the fact that we keep being told how kindly Arthur is while he also more than once talks about how much fun it had been to kill "the Boche" in WWI, sat really uneasily for me alongside the more charming parts of the book.) Some amusing parts, and I'll keep an eye out for the third book in the series but I won't be hurrying to track it down either.… (mehr)

Barbara Buncle lives in genteel poverty in early 30s rural England. When her finances take a hit, she decides to turn to writing, and her book—written under a nom de plume, is a runaway hit. Only Miss Buncle has based her characters on the people who live in her village, who aren't all best pleased with how they've been portrayed, and shenanigans ensue. This is soufflé light, and there are some parts which are a bit far-fetched, but the whole point of this kind of book is to provide some frothy entertainment where the good end happily and the bad (or at least, the not so nice) end unhappily, and that's the kind of book I needed just now.… (mehr)

I'm so happy that I decided to read this book! There is everything I love in this book - it's charming, witty, kind, the characters are interesting and it was fun to read.

It's a story of a woman who desperately needs money so she decides to write a book, and because she has absolutely no imagination, she simply describes her friends and neighbours. Unfortunately, the book becomes a bestseller and people recognise themselves and, let me tell you, they are definitely not happy about the things they read about themselves.

I really liked the doctor's wife, she was so real and nice. The vicar was a wonderful character, full of ideals and very naive. The negative characters seemed a bit too strong for me, a bit too farcical, but I enjoyed them anyway.

It was one of the best books I've read in years and I'm really glad I've finally decided to read it :)

On a friend’s recommendation, I picked up the first Miss Buncle book last year…and fell in love with it. When I had the chance to read book two in the series recently, I jumped at it. What a fun story! In some ways, it’s different from the first book in the series, but it still retains that simple charm of the first book, while not being a slow or draggy read.

There are spots of humor in the book, such as when Miss Buncle (now Mrs. Abbott) is convinced that “Someday…somebody would find out that she was an imposter in the adult world.” I could relate to that! Or the time when someone’s trousers mysteriously went missing on a very important night….

This was a sweet, fun, fast read. If you are looking for a lighthearted, easy read, I’d highly recommend this series. I adore Mrs. Abbott and her perspective on the world, and the way the other characters are described is both funny and perceptive. I’m looking forward to reading the other books in this series.
