Charles Stone, III

The underlying theme behind Drumline may be a standard number (talented but rebellious kid moves to new school, goes for the smart and beautiful girl, clashes with authority figures, but conforms just enough to make some friends and save the day), but the film’s depiction of college marching band subculture is entertaining and educational. Lead actor Nick Cannon (Devon) brings depth to his role and is well supported by the rest of the cast. Devon, a street drummer, struggles against fellow band members, his estranged father, and his own desire to have what he has yet to earn—the respect of others. Overall, Drumline is fun though a little slow at times. Having said that, I never got tired of watching the film’s intense and focused drumming scenes, especially the drum-off.
