Loved it. Primary sources throughout,letters used to provide humanizing details so that the great scientist can be seen as the husband and father as well. Enough detail on the barnacles to help a layman understand how they shaped Darwin’s thinking, without being too dry or technical for the non-specialist

Great read, detailing the trials and tribulations of others who explored the idea of evolution pre-Darwin ( or in Wallace’s case, contemporaneously.) I’ve read of Aristotle and Da Vinci many times before, but never in a way that really made me feel I could see them walking the streets, living their day to day lives. that is the strength of this book. The science is there, clearly laying out how the idea of evolution occurred, what experiences contributed to the speculations, but so is the humanity. I was struck in particular by the story of Bory,pre- re olution France, being allowed on the roof to spy the giraffes through the telescope.excellent read… (mehr)

The concept is quite interesting, but the book seems to have a lot of subtle malapropisms, and so I took a break.
