Tribulations of the Shortcut Man: A Novel von P. G. Sturges
One of those rare cases for me where I liked the sequel just as much, if not more, than the original! The characters are great, the action is tight, and the plot just hums along! Good job Dick-Dave! :-)
Another Shortcut Man novel leaves a certain tingling in my hand! Dick is back, and trouble finds him, as per usual! This tale wasn't quite as rip-roaring as the last, but I still enjoyed it! And I loved the trading around of the ficus! Nice! I did not, however, like the negativity toward mail carriers, as I happen to be one. And I am not at all like the ones described herein. Still, good novel, and I eagerly await the next!
This was a short, fun read! Maybe too short! Loved the idea of a Shortcut Man, and thought it was well executed! Good action, gritty and fast paced!
Solid 4+ stars. I read this in two days. It is very entertaining. The writing style is very good.
Here is my complaint: It is very well written and has a captivating and complex plot; however, at several critical junctures Sturges has the protagonist do something that is so far over the top that it is unbelievable. What is frustrating, to me, is that the situation could have been handled with interesting action that would have been believable. The way these situations are plotted consistent with a comic book mentality that shocks and amuses a reader but also breaks the reader's suspension of disbelief. These plot breaks are a type of authorial intrusion that bring the reader from being "in" the story to the surface of the story.
I'd love to see it re-written. Take out the over the top, unreal exaggerations and you have a modern semi-noir novel with a much longer life span.… (mehr)
