there were definitely moments here that were funny or interesting pieces of history but overall this was a slog for me. at points throughout i thought it was getting better and i'd steam through a chapter or two but then it would slow down again, and be bogged down in something that may or may not prove to be worth paying attention to. by the end, the convoluted solving of the crime wasn't satisfying to me at all. i am glad to learn what i did about late 19th century poland, but that and the moments of humor are all i can really compliment here.… (mehr)

I didn't know to pay close attention until too late, so maybe I missed something... but everything about the jewish community and the very phrase "white slavery" left a bad feeling. That really needs to be explicitly contextualized, I understand this is set in a specific time and society, but it seems like the critiques were focused on other issues and just flew by this.

This should be entertaining enough, a detective comedy of manners set in 1893 Cracow. But it isn't. There's something about the tone that feels sneering throughout. It makes fun of Zofia almost throughout. She is married to a professor and takes every advantage of his position, she's a social climber. But that doesn't excuse the edge to this, it didn't feel as if it was affectionately taking the mick.
