His life is perfect he thinks. Then, his brother puts a doubt in his head about his wife. From there, it's down hill from there! Things get worse and worse! It is sadly hilarious! I rather liked this book. It mixes a noir-ish, Travis-McGee-ish detective plot with a rather more light-hearted approach. The hero is something of a self-centered jerk, but with a good heart. The writing is clean, and the pace is fast-moving without seeming to be hurried. It is the sort of Sunday-afternoon book that begs to be read in one sitting, which is what I did.
On the plus side the plot is engaging, the mystery-to-be-solved is twisty without being obnoxiously so, the author cleverly drops enough clues in amoungst the red herrings to allow the reader to guess something of the solution (and without giving too much away until the end), and the characterizations are decently done.
On the down side, the detective hero doesn't do as much detective kind of work as I would have like to have seen (but then, I really enjoy the details of such things). The character of the hero is fine for this type of novel, but his sexual prowess and endurance smacks more of James Bond wishful thinking than reality.
All in all, the book is well worth your time if what you're looking for is some light, fun reading. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.… (mehr)
