How to Catch a Magical by Samuel Thews is a book I requested and the review is voluntary. Wow, this is such a smart, well thought out, fantastic, fantasy book for middle grade and teens. Like Harry Potter and other great kid books made for middle grade and teens, these books and this one cross the age line where everyone can enjoy the books! I am in my sixties and totally loved this book. The characters were very well developed with real dialogue. The plot was unpredictable and kept me on my toes. Lots of excitement, never a dull moment! I hope this is a series, I would love to follow it! It has lots of magical creatures, mythical creatures, portals to another world, wonderful world building, and so much more. A rare delight in kids/teen's books. Not since Harry Potter have I seen such good world building. Wonderful job.… (mehr)
I love it. It's quaint and simple and perhaps the storyline is a little clichéd, but in those things it is truly refreshing. Phinnegan, the protagonist, is good-hearted. There are many clever throwbacks to classic fairytales and there is no love triangle. Quaint is really the best word for it, like The Neverending Story or the Princess Bride. A delight.
