It's always a little weird to read editorial cartoons fifteen years after they first appeared. Many of the political figures are still prominent today, but so many have fallen along the wayside and are fading from memory as are the events in which they figured. It's amusing to see what angered the cartoonist then and think, "Oh, buddy, you have no idea how much worse it's gonna get."

Still, it's good to remind oneself of even relatively recent historical events in order to see the continuities, the places where history is always repeating itself. The conservative vs. liberal back and forth is as regular and reliable as the black and white spies from Mad magazine. The conspiracy theories are always spiraling and the culture wars rage on over abortion, Christmas, and children's education.

Tom Tomorrow's cartoons are dense and wordy, but I easily identify with the liberal anger and sarcasm dripping from every page.

"Tom Tomorrow" is known for his biting/ funny political commentary, as reflected in his cartoon series "This Modern World". "The Very Silly Mayor" is a very different work -- a children's book intended to lead its young readers to gently question political authority. The mayor of a "medium sized city" has some very strange ideas -- that the police should wear clown costumes, and that firemen should use peanut butter instead of water to put out fires. The people go along with these ideas because everyone else is doing it, and they don't want anyone to laugh at them. Sparky the penguin leads people to the Mayor's office to challenge his ideas, and he quickly capitulates. Thus, the youngsters learn to trust their own judgement even if others disagree with them (though why children should trust their own naïve judgements is never explained). No matter; there are plenty of worse, and better, things for the kids to read.… (mehr)

Cutting with a sharp wit through the cheesy dullness of the MAGA death cult, this book scores a bullseye on every single page. Skewering the sycophants, exposing the brain-dead idiocy and zombie-like shamblings of the America-hating trumpistas, this book is an absolute jewel.

Quick impressions: Readers may want to think this is satire, but I think Tom Tomorrow is basically presenting current reality, which gets so ridiculous and painful that the dark humor practically writes itself. These are comics that for some folks may really hit close to home. However, the humor can vary in quality with some strips better than others. I liked it but in small doses.
