Going into this one, I was a little nervous because I've never been able to focus on memoirs very easily. I get far too distracted, which leads me to preferring fiction. I chose to start reading this one about two weeks before my review was due just in case. It did take me a little longer to get through this one, but it had nothing to do with this book itself.

This book was written amazingly; Tim Tran truly has a way with words. The way he described everything made it feel as if I was there experiencing it myself. When it came to the more complex things, such as descriptions of his job, he used basic English which definitely helped me personally to understand. I also loved that he continued to make connections between people and events. This was extremely helpful to me as it helped me keep track.

This book taught me so much about this part of history. In my classes, we were simply taught the basics, but this went into such detail that it brought the entire situation to life. Tim Tran described the pain individuals and families both suffered.

I think my favorite part about the entire thing was how humble and sweet he seemed. Despite everything, he still looked out for others and helped them as much as he can. He seemed like the sweetest, most genuine person, which made the entire thing more emotional for me.

Overall, I absolutely think that everyone should read this book. It was touching and raw, and it opened my eyes. I personally had never payed much attention in history classes. I did just enough to get an A, then I'd zone out and read a book instead of listening. I truly wish that I'd discovered books similar to this when I still had those classes, because if I had, I believe I'd have been more invested in the subject.

For those of us who have only known life in an affluent country with a stable, democratically elected government, it’s hard to imagine the danger and drama of regime change in other parts of the world. Everything you believed in and all you’ve worked so hard to attain, can abruptly become a liability, and the peace and security of your loved ones suddenly put at risk.
This is the fate that befell so many South Vietnamese the day after the fall of Saigon in 1975, which marked the end of the Vietnam War with victory for the communist North Vietnamese forces.
One such person was Tim Tran, who relates his experience in the memoir, American Dreamer: How I Escaped Communist Vietnam and Built a Successful Life in America by Tim Tran with Tom Fields-Meyer.
To make that historical event even more personal and painful, Tran, a native-born Vietnamese, had experienced life in America on a scholarship and attained a degree in business from the University of California, Berkeley. He’d only returned to South Vietnam less than a year before the country fell to the communists.
In American Dreamer, Tran describes his childhood in a loving family that thrived through hard work, determination and amazing resourcefulness that emerges out of necessity. And how his father provided the motivation and the training for him to succeed academically.
Chapters about his immersion into American culture during his university years are a testament to his outgoing personality and the gracious, friendly, and helpful reception he received from almost all the Americans he interacted with.
Accounts of navigating day-to-day living in a totalitarian regime, harrowing experiences trying to arrange an escape from Vietnam, life-threatening confrontations as boat person beset by pirates, and volunteering with agencies while in a refugee camp are gripping and told with candour and humility.
Once back in America, career success is achieved with a combination of effort, excellence, enthusiasm, and integrity The author just doesn’t abide in America, he embraces it, holds it to his heart, then magnanimously gives back by creating an endowment that will for many years support the library operations at Pacific University. In these pages, Tran also pays tribute to all those who have supported him in fulfilling this dream.
Entertaining and inspiring, American Dreamer, attests to the fact the American dream is still alive for those determined enough to pursue it. And furthermore, there’s no need to make America great again, for people like Tran, it still is and always has been.

This is a book ALL Americans should read! It applies to much of what is going on now.

This is an outstanding, inspirational true story, written as well as any non-fiction I have ever read! It is so well organized and very easily followed. In spite of unimaginable hardships, he still applies humor and intrigue. A well-written novel could not have been more interesting than this tale!

Although "Tim Tran" was blessed with a wonderful father who taught important, strong values, it is easy to discover that it was his mother, who had been through many severe hardships in her life, who was the congealing force in the family's success and determination. His mother was a quiet, hard working woman with great entrepreneur skills and wisdom beyond er years.

"Tim's" father was raised wealthy and quite well educated. In North Vietnam, his father joined in groups fighting for independence but had the foresight to realize he needed to find a way for him and his family to reside in South Vietnam. Refugees at first, they eventually made it to a better life in Saigon.

Through "Tim's" father's diligence in his sons education, "Tim" earned much success in school, and many awards. This served him well for the rest of his life.

Times were hard as the war in Vietnam escalated. With outstanding awards and recommendations, "Tim was able to get a scholarship to go to the U.S. for college. Among the five foreign students chosen to attend college in the US, one was a girl, "Cathy" who he became acquainted with. Little did they know how their paths would continue to, miraculously, cross.

Eagerly accepted by member of his dorm, "Tim" experienced American culture - to good and the bad. He never criticized, eagerly learned, and always was friendly and positive. He ended up graduating from Berkeley. His VISA ended and he had to make a difficult choice in those turbulent times whether or not to return to his homeland as was expected.

From this time forth, "Tim" experienced very difficult, discouraging times of betrayal and degradation. However, with the strong work ethics, honesty, tenacity and a positive attitude he had been raised with, he would eventually. prevail.

This book makes such a strong statement! It has earned my highest recommendation!
