A close analysis of the evolution of the U.S. Army looking at the iterative process from which the the Army of World War II evolved into the force that conducted Operation Desert Storm. Among other issues, Trauschweizer considers how force structure was buffeted by high strategy, the Army's search for relevance in the High Nuclear Age and how it came to settle in to accepting that the deterrence role of Seventh Army in Europe was its key mission. Being German, the author is also very interested in the process by which the U.S. military and the Bundeswehr came to influence each other.

The more casual reader will probably be put off by the close attention paid to how the American order of battle in Europe evolved, but, while a rather dry topic, this attention to force structure might be the most important aspect of the book that really isn't duplicated elsewhere.
