Rezensionen

Two generations of Englishmen in India. Two generations of Englishmen living in a changing India.
Charles Trevelyan came to India in the middle of the 19th century and immediately jumped into the thick of administration. He appeared to be balanced, pragmatic, dogmatic, and fair. India changed during the 19th century, transitioning from under the rule of The East India Company to under the British Raj after 1857. Charles fought for fair taxes and the education system and predicted the effects of poor policy. His character shines through in the narration.
In contrast, Humphrey's narration of his eighteen years in India during the last years of the Raj is a narration of his experiences. The story gives you excellent insight into the administration of the Raj and how they managed the many kingdoms in India. However, you miss the drama of the fight for independence, seen through the eyes of a British official. Also, he glossed over the few years he remained in India after Independence, which is a tragedy.
The second half of the book is dry. But, it is an excellent book (along with "Two Under The Indian Sun") if you want to gain deeper insights into British India.
