I ended up enjoying this less so then I thought I would, but I blame that partially on marketing and my own idiocy. I was expecting something like THE PRINCESS BRIDE, which this does share similarities with (though I'm sorry Mr. Tripp, you're not quite on the same level as Mr Goldman), but tries a little too hard to be like. My own idiocy can be blamed on the fact I just watched the movie SCARAMOUCHE of which this also is vaguely similar to (though that's more a product of the "type" of story it is, as I sincerely doubt Tripp knows the movie) and all I kept thinking was "Man if Scaramouche had just two seconds with these guys..."

Longer review later.

I probably would have given it 3.5 stars but I rolled back because I didn't like it enough for 4.

What I really liked was that it was gory and violent and that the main character was a bad ass woman Marine. I have a soft spot for bad ass women Marines...

This was actually a really good, original vampire novel. The main character, an antiques dealer who thinks he's a worse person than he is (although he is pretty greedy) was a different kind of protagonist for this kind of story, and I really liked him. Some of the other characters could have used more development, but the writing was still quite good, and I would read more by this author.

Its not often I run across a vampire book that manages to do something different. Yes, there is a vampire hunter, and the Catholic Church. But there is also TREASURE. Yes, treasure.

We have a Sax, a man who runs a well top-tier antique store. He is a coward. He cares about how he looks. Add in Middle Aged with a bum leg, he's the last person to be a vampire hunter. However, when he wins an overpriced Napoleon Clock at an auction, he gets pulled into the Vampire hunting scene, but he's not a newbie. The Vampires have the best stuff, because the older they get, the more they hang on to their hoard....

Its a fun heist/assassination book, that manages to capture the seriousness of the situation, while hitting all the points that make a great Vampire Story.
