This is the story of a thirteen year old girl, Ngina, from the Bamboo Village in the heart of Nyery, Kenya during the war of independence in the Mau Mau era in 1955. She ends up being caught up in the middle of the battle because she ran away from her village in order to avoid marrying the village chief.
The story's setting takes place in Kenya during the 1950s and the author accurately reflected some of the turmoil going on at the time. The design and layout of the book will attract young readers since its set up as a comic but the illustrations are reflective of the author's words.
