Robert and Brenda Vale are Professorial Research Fellows in the School of Architecture, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. An excellent look at how sustainable many aspects of modern live are, including transport, house, food, pets and hobbies. It attempts to analyse the energy and resource usage for these facets of our lives and work out how they compare to each other. The comparison is achieved by working out the amount of land each of them would require if the energy and resources contained within them had to be grown in a sustainable manner, rather than relying on short term fossil fuel usage.

The title comes from the energy cost that they've attributed to pets - non-working dogs have quite a large footprint in the Western world thanks to the processed dog food, toys, etc that their owners buy for them. Definitely food for thought with many other surprises concerning which bits of our lives we should concentrate on to make ourselves more sustainable and reduce our ecological footprint.… (mehr)
