B requested this because we've liked illustrator Ohora's other books (Wolfie the Bunny). This one is about a little girl who expertly demonstrates how to put a monster to bed - what not to do, and what to do. With a confident tone ("Don't ask your parents to help you. They know a lot about putting kids to bed, but nothing about putting monsters to bed"), lots of color, and the appropriate amount of grossness (sour milk, slug mush), the monster goes off to nightmare-land!

I felt so-so about this book. I did like the perspective it was written in. It was in the perspective of the main character which was a cute little girl talking about how she takes care of her monster. Since it was in the little girl’s perspective it was very casual and enthusiastic, using a lot of exclamation points and italicized words for emphasis. What one of my reservations about this book is the premise seems to be similar to a lot of other children’s books. Just a few weeks ago we read another book about a child and their monster. I did like the main idea of this book which is that sometimes we have to step up and take responsibility because no one else can do it but us.… (mehr)

A young girl's monster doesn't want to go to bed. Hilarity ensues as the story presents the don'ts and then the do's of how to get your monster to bed. Colorful acrylic paint illustrations use a palette of fuschia, mustard yellow, turquoise, bubblegum pink, and moss green accompanied with heavy-ish black lines. This is a highly entertaining story with lots of laughs.

I remember reading this book back in seventh grade and instantly it became a favorite of mine. It still is today. I laughed until tears ran down my face, I gasped aloud, I even screamed. I read the book over and over, and it made a deep impression on my 12-13 year-old self. I often think of the book in the present day. One of the best books of my childhood, hands down.
